Growing beyond cocoa: Sahr’s plans for the future

For Sahr Kortta, farming is about more than growing cocoa. It is about creating a future in which all six of his children can continue going to school.

The 34-year-old lead farmer lives with his wife and children in Teukor village in Sierra Leone’s Eastern Province. On his seven-acre farm, cocoa is the main source of income, alongside avocado and orange trees. Since establishing his DAF plot in 2025, however, he has discovered new opportunities.

“The annual crops It already gives me extra income through the annual crops like maize, pigeon pea and cassava,” Sahr says. “I want to build on that and make my family’s income more secure.”

Sahr has worked with Tradin Organic since 2022 and is eager to put new knowledge into practice. Through the DAF app, he is learning about everything from raising seedlings in nurseries to setting up a DAF plot. As a lead farmer, he also shares his experience with a training group of 21 farmers.

“I can use the tablet out in the field, and then study with the group in the evening,” he explains.

His ambitions are practical and close to home: a more reliable income, continued education for his children and, one day, an improved family home. For Sahr, every new skill and every additional harvest is a step towards those goals.
